Nico Paz to take over Messi’s iconic No. 10 shirt after retirement

Argentina midfielder Nico Paz is set to take over Lionel Messi’s iconic No. 10 shirt following the Inter Miami forward’s retirement from international football, according to Argentine journalist and pundit Federico Bueno.

Messi announced his retirement from international football on August 31, bringing an end to a remarkable career with the Argentina national team spanning more than two decades.

The 39-year-old is expected to formally bid farewell to Argentine supporters on October 6 when Argentina face Benin in a friendly at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.

Although Argentina reportedly considered retiring the prestigious No. 10 shirt in honour of Messi, FIFA regulations prevent national teams from permanently retiring squad numbers.

Bueno, an ESPN Argentina correspondent, claimed that the decision has internally been made for Paz to inherit the iconic shirt if Lionel Scaloni renews his contract as Argentina manager.

“Should Scaloni renew his contract as Argentina manager, then Nico Paz will become the new number 10. This determination has been made internally,” Bueno said.

Paz, 22, is regarded as one of the promising attacking midfielders in world football. The former Real Madrid player completed a permanent €60 million move to Como last summer and has an €80 million buy-back clause in his contract.
